Sandra was born October 12, 1954, in Kodiak, Alaska, to J.D. and Frances Covington. She was born while her father was stationed at the naval base in Kodiak. She lived there with her mother, dad, and older sister, until J.D. finished his term in the service, and they moved back “home” to Texas. After living a few years in New Mexico, mother, dad, Sandra and her four siblings moved to Pasco in 1968.
Sandra’s mom, Frances, got a job as a P.E. teacher at Pasco High School and her dad, J.D. got a job as a math teacher and football coach across the river at Richland High School. She went to Stevens Middle School and graduated from Pasco High in 1973. Sandra married John Morgan in 1974. She earned her teaching degree from Eastern Washington University in 1978 and began working at Kamiakin High School in the Kennewick School District as a P.E. teacher. She retired from Kamiakin in 2012 but still substitute teaches in the Pasco School District.
At Kamiakin, Sandra coached track for many years and could always be counted on to open the gym for students and athletes before school and during lunch. She also helped with her daughter’s competitive volleyball club in the early 90’s and coached track for several years at McLoughlin Middle School.
Sandra has been clerk of course at the Pasco Invite since 1982. In this role she checks in athletes for all running events, gives them their lane assignment, and lane number. Additionally in the spring, you can usually find her doing the same thing for district and regional events. In the fall, she is clerk of course and leads the crew responsible for lane assignments at the WIAA State Cross Country Meet. For the past 15 years, Sandra has been a board member on the Pasco Education Foundation and is also the president for PEO. Both organizations award scholarships to students in the Tr-Cities for continuing education opportunities.
Sandra has three children: Ana (Chris), Courtney (Brent), and Kurt (Jessica) and eight grandchildren: Kaleb, Kyla, Kenny, Eleanor, Alaina, Sawyer, Sydney, and Emmelyn.
